2024 Subaru WRX Stickshift Showdown: Limited vs TR

The last ten years have witnessed a decline in the availability of affordable fun cars, making it noteworthy when a mainstream manufacturer announces plans to expand its lineup of performance models. Recently, Subaru introduced the 2024 Subaru WRX TR, a new trim that caught the attention of enthusiasts.

The introduction of the WRX TR signifies Subaru’s attempt to carve out a niche in the shrinking market of sport compacts. With no halo model above its rally-inspired sedan, Subaru saw an opportunity to explore new territory with the “Tuner Ready” WRX. This model, while lacking some features of the STI, offers a unique set of upgrades designed to enhance the driving experience.

One notable aspect of the WRX TR is what it doesn’t have compared to the STI. The TR retains the base car’s 271-horsepower engine tune and does not include an upgraded AWD system or additional power. However, it does come with chassis upgrades such as Brembo brakes, improved steering response, and Recaro seats. The TR also features a set of 19-inch wheels wrapped in Bridgestone Potenza S007 summer performance tires.

Despite its promising features, the WRX TR is a limited-time offering, set to be replaced by the tS trim in 2025. The tS will offer similar upgrades to the TR along with the GT’s adaptive suspension and integrated drive modes. While the TR may be short-lived, it presents a unique opportunity for enthusiasts to experience a sporty sedan with enhanced performance capabilities.

In a comparison between the 2023 Subaru WRX Limited and the 2024 Subaru WRX TR, the TR emerged as the winner with 351 points compared to the Limited’s 348 points. The TR’s enhancements in suspension, brakes, seats, and tires contribute to an overall improved driving experience. While it may not be a game-changer, the TR offers a refined driving experience that sets it apart from the standard WRX.

Ultimately, the WRX TR proves to be a worthy upgrade for enthusiasts seeking a more dynamic driving experience. With its improved handling, grip, and overall performance, the TR outshines the standard WRX in several key areas. While price may be a consideration for some buyers, the enhancements offered by the TR make it a compelling option for those looking for a more engaging driving experience.
